The Drongo Sky Dance
inspired by week 5 of WANTED from Writing in the Dark
An evening like any other ...
Fed the fur kids, the chickens. Took a shower.
And then, off to the balcony ...
Enjoy the view, unwind, smoke my insomniac self to sleep
Rolling hills carpeted with forest, beloved mountaintop in the distance
I prepare the fragrant herb.
Break a chunk off carefully, place it in the bowl
Set flame to crystal laden nugget
Inhale deeply, settle in ... And then
A group of racket tailed Drongos
Long tailfeathers tipped with plumes
Swooped in one by one
Blessing me with an aerial acrobatic show
Sky dancing - diving, rolling, floating on and dropping out - of the air currents
They know how to have a good time
Love who they are, being in their bodies - that they can fly
A group of friends, showing off to one another - high on life
Maybe males wooing females with daring displays
Taking turns …
Immersive - mesmerizing - brilliant
Their joy contagious
If I could transform … I would
Sprout wings, grow a beak, a body - black, sleek, aerodynamic
Take to the skies - Join their celebration
extravagant tailfeathers streaming behind
Propelled by passion, child-like wonder, imagination, glee
Grateful … for our shared co-existence.
